IceSave: Silfur Egils And A Dutch-Icelandic Cooperation

Silfur Egils, the talk show was packed yesterday with lots of good information.

You can watch it here at Lara Hanna’s blog. Many of the interviews are in English, including Eva Joly, Alain Lipietz, Michael Hudson and Gerard Van Vliet.

Gerard is the spokesperson for the Dutch savers who haven’t been reimbursed for the money they had in IceSave.

A disclosure, Gerard and I are working on a book on IceSave for publication outside Iceland. We are trying to explain things in a simple manner from both sides, although the events of last week have made any simplifying attempts quite difficult.

Looks like Eva Joly got the memo. Click here to see her Kastljos’ interview from last night.

She definitely seemed more positive than last time she was here, which is exactly what the nation needs. She is absolutely correct in pointing out that there are not going to be magical solutions, that things are going to be tough before they get better.

But the points of the memo remain, there is little trust in Iceland and the bitter experience left over from the Baugur courtcase earlier this decade has not filled peoples’ hearts with confidence.

Special Prosecutor Enters KPMG & PWC

The Office of the Special Prosecutor conducted a search at KPMG and PriceWaterhouseCoopers yesterday. Twenty-two people took part in the operation which is supposed to gather information on whether Glitnir, Kaupthing and Landsbankinn knowingly published misleading information about their assets’ worth in annual and quarterly reports.

According to Eyjan.is the group that entered KPMG is composed of French accounting specialists while the one that searched PWC is Norwegian. They work for the Special Prosecutor’s office on the behest of Eva Joly.

Bloomberg: Iceland Banks Didn’t Violate Rules, President Grimsson Says

“Whatever you say about the Icelandic banks, they operated within the framework of the European regulations on banking and finance,” Grimsson, who is the country’s head of state and doesn’t lead the government, said in an interview with Bloomberg radio in New York today.

The president who’s got his foot firmly stuck in his mouth strikes again, Olafur Ragnar Grimsson is already backtracking from the quote in Bloomberg. With the image of having been the bankers’ president makes him an uncomfortable representative for Iceland in sensitive times.

The Icelandic banks are being investigated by a special prosecutor in Iceland, the SFO in the UK and Eva Joly.

Eva Joly And Olafur Hauksson Visit SFO

Special prosecutor Olafur Thor Hauksson and Eva Joly are in London today meeting with Richard Alderman, head of Serious Frauds Office. The purpose of the meeting according to mbl.is is to examine grounds for co-operation. SFO took the initiative last month, as it has Kaupthing, Landsbankinn and Glitnir under investigation. Separately, the Serious Fraud Office is understood to have contacted Eva Joly, the Icelandic government’s fraud consultant, in the hope of arranging a meeting. The SFO is in the process of gathering intelligence on Kaupthing in London, where two-thirds of its corporate loan clients were based.

Gordon Brown has in this context, declared for the British parliament that he works “with the IMF” for the best possible to estimate what they are entitled to demand of Iceland. IMF on its side not only exposes the process by providing loans to the outline of Iceland, but set conditions that can be characterized as being extremely unreasonable. This is the case when it comes to the goal of bringing the Icelandic government deficit of zero by 2013. Such a goal may be impossible fulfilled, but will still lead to massive cuts in the most indispensable public expenditure on education, health, social security, etc. The EU Commission has defended the United Kingdom and the President of the Commission already in November said it would not be any European assistance as long as the Icesave issue was not resolved.

Eva Joly: This is much huger, much much more important. This bankruptcy is much bigger than Enron, involving a lot of people, involving other banks, and really the investigation is huge.
