The Financial Times put McD’s Iceland departure on its front page today, and the central role of McDonald’s as the prime example/metaphor for the costs and benefits of a global economy
The pros: as per Thomas Friedman: “No two countries that both had McDonald’s had fought a war against each other since each got its McDonald’s.”
The cons: variously, McDonald’s is a symbol of American cultural imperialism, capitalism, environmental meat-eatist degradation. And, of course, its departure could now mean that Iceland, now off the special sauce, is also off the world’s economic grid.

I decided to check out the line at McDonald’s last night. Thirty minutes wait for a Big Mac and cars lining up like in a doomsday movie.

This certainly doesn´t square with all of the local bloggers and pundits giving McDonalds the single finger salute exclaiming that they have only visited once or twice at the most over the last 15 or so years and no one will miss them. Bullshitters galore!

bloggers dont speak for everyone. I am quite partial to McDonalds but never have I eaten it in Iceland. If I am going to spend that much money on food I sure as hell dont want to be hungry again in 2 hours.
But I can totally imagine heaps of kids nagging there parents to get McDonalds this weekend. I mean nagging….naggging….naggggggingg.

I quake before the power of Friedman’s searing logic. Not.

As far as the “good riddance” pundits and bloggers go, I suspect that the majority are just whistling past the graveyard.

I always said the US should have bombarded Afghanistan with fast food, cable TV and free Internet access, the whole pesky Taliban thing would have gone away faster than you could say “Big Mac”.
Seriously, do you envision the youth of our country, whose most agile muscle is the SMS joint in the thumb, rising up against anyone? Not so much.
After this, I may not dare to leave the house after dark (difficult between Dec 1 and Feb 1).

Although we may be safe as long as 10 – 11 still has 24hr access to the candy bar.
