As far as justifications go the one offered by Iceland’s very own born-again Christian charlatan Gunnar Thorsteinsson in defence of his friend, the disgraced mayor of Kopavogur Gunnar Birgisson takes some beating.
Gunnar Birgisson’s is under siege for having directed around 50 million ISK in official funds to his daughter’s business from his position as mayor of Kopavogur and chairman of the board at the Student Loan Association. Sometimes for jobs that were never completed, and to make matters worse, her company was registered at Gunnar’s home for a while.
You would think the media would be all over this case like the British on their “expense-gate”, but it isn’t. Except for the Word on the Street at eyjan.is which says that during a meeting held by the Independence Party in the town, Gunnar Thorsteinsson told the assembled that “the truth will set you free”, claiming that at some point in time it would have been considered positive that children wanted to be close to their parents at work.
Yes, that’s how mad Iceland really is.
