…to be a politician in Iceland. Because the three branches of power are not seperated, someone who resigns as a minister can easily continue as a member of parliament.
The people vote for 63 seats in the parliament. The parties with the majority then hand out cabinet positions to members of parliament who do not relinquish their seat. So they are members of the executive branch and legislative branch with the power of majority.
All checks and balances disappear with that sort of a system. That’s why a new organization which is preparing to run in May looks enticing. They want to change the constitution and implement systematic changes whereas the seperation of power is made much clearer.
Meanwhile, the meeting between Geir Haarde, Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir, Ingibjorg Solrun Gisladottir and Ossur Skarphedinsson today has produced the normal outcome expected of their government, nothing substancial so far.

Just heard of the resignation today. Ghana too has this same stupid provision in our constitution whereby a majority of the cabinet must come from parliaments. I think we’ll also be changing it soon. It’s just ridiculous.
