Was The IceSave Commotion Really About Local Power Struggles?

As the government celebrates the fact that the British and Dutch governments appear to be willing to talk about IceSave again, an interesting theory has not received the attention it should.

A member of the fishing industry reform committee has wondered out loud whether the opposition’s silence on IceSave and the government’s sudden halt in fishing quota reform can be a coincidence? Finnbogi Vikar, who represents the Movement in the committee thinks that a deal might have been struck.

The opposition promises to let IceSave through.

The government promises to halt plans of reform in the fishing industry.

Did the commotion surrounding IceSave really revolve around local power struggles?

Could it be that the delays in concluding IceSave really revolved around special interest groups retaining their power and influence in Iceland? It will be interesting to follow the development of both IceSave and fishing industry reforms in Iceland in the next couple of years.
