The obvious fact about Gunnar Birgisson is that he is an Independent Party old timer. He is so corrupt that he is absolutely sure he isn’t.

Earlier this week Deloitte delivered a report chastising the business directed towards Gunnar’s daugther during his time as Kopavogur’s mayor. The business she received from the Icelandic Student Loan Organization while he was the chairman of the board has also been deemed totally unappropriate.

But the old guard stands behind their man like they stood behind convicted criminal, Arni Johnsen, now MP again and one of few people who have had the nerve to ask for pardon and received one.

The Student Loan Organization’s board does not think it needs to act on the report.

Ingvi Hrafn Jonsson, owner and talk-show host of INN TV (Iceland’s poorer cousin of Fox) asked Gunnar how terrible it felt to see his daughter attacked.

And therefore Gunnar will leave office absolutely convinced he has done nothing wrong.
