The Independence Party convention this weekend confirmed the stronghold that the old guard of David Oddson and the Fisheries Union has on the party. A declaration stating that Iceland should retract its application to the EU immediately was approved by the majority. The fallout could see an interesting split in what was once a proudly modern party. Could we be seeing a path forming similar to the one the Republican Party has taken in the US, with the extremists taking over the party and the moderates deserting? How will Icelandic voters react?
The recent convention with its statements which are probably written in the office of the Fisheries Union and the Farmer’s Association has made me feel this is enough. I wish to be removed from the Independence Party’s member list. I am not interested in belonging to an organisation which upholds eighteenth century nationalism and where the main goal is to guard the special interests of the few, at the cost of the nation.
- An Independence Party member leaves the party
It is not enough to talk about freedoms, responsibility and caring, but one has to live according to these concepts. That is something the Independence Party has not done for the past ten years and there is no likelihood that it will for the next ten.
- Gudbjorn Gudbjornsson leaves the Independence Party
It is better for the party to accept that the process has begun and concentrate on landing as good an agreement as possible.
- Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir, outgoing vice-chairman
The party is starting to look more like a cult.
- Sveinn Andri Sveinsson, spin doctor for Gudlaugur Thor Thordarson
The coffee house elite does not vote for the Independence Party anyways.
- Hannes Holmsteinn Gissurarson is a happy camper

I wish I could write like you as Margaret Laurence once said “When I say “work” I only mean writing. Everything else is just odd jobs.”
