Pity Their Poor Relatives

Today DV.is quotes Gunnar Birgisson, Independence Party major of Kopavogur, Iceland’s second biggest town after Reykjavik as saying “even though she is my daughter she should not be punished for it”.

The reason is that the Social Democrats in the town council have requested explanations for the accusations that keep coming up about Gunnar’s daughter’s publishing company receiving 40 million ISK from the town in the last six years for various publishing assignements, without the usual protocols being applied.

Ignoring the question of what sort of father puts his daughter in such a questionable position, the excuse is reminscant of the one used by David Oddson’s supporters when defending the appointment of David’s son to the district court, ahead of candidates who were more qualified.

It must be tough to be the offspring of powerful people.
