Inept all around. That is Althingi today.
It is 12.30am and a convicted thief, who happens to be the only MP who still hasn’t dared to reveal who is paying his way in politics, is lecturing the Icelandic nation in history and on the EU(full of xenophobia, misstating of facts and ridicule).
Arni Johnsen, who steals from his constituents and did time in jail a few years ago is following the filibustering lead of Illugi Gunnarsson who was bailed out of Fund 9 in Glitnir and still hasn’t had to answer these questions on his involvement, Gudlaugur Thor Thordarson whose way has been paid by Jon Asgeir Johannesson and Hannes Smarason and Hoskuldur Thorhallsson who thought he understood Norwegian better than anyone else this autumn.
Steingrimur J. Sigfusson, the real leader of the inept government is probably right when he says that Althingi is unable to deal with the aftermath of the economic crash.
And the nation is inept as well, the latest poll shows that 39% of voters would like nothing more than to see the Independence Party back in charge.
Xenophobia, racism, cowardice and criminality? Iceland is at its Treaty of Versailles moment in history.
PS: It has been revealed that the opposition has organized itself around a schedule which states exactly how long each of them is supposed to go and speak on the IceSave issue. So far several individual opposition MP’s have disgraced the podium more than 50 times only to stall the discussion.
PPS: Arni Johnsen’s speech was so full of historic misinterpretations, downright racism and xenophobia that it really should be translated into foreign languages. It would allow foreigners a glimpse into the dark soul of Iceland.

Skrif þín einkennast af fáfræði og skilningsleysi, skrifin eru líka glæpsamlega ærumeyðandi. Held að þú ætti að slaka aðeins á.

Thought I should translate the comment from Hallur above:
“Your writing is characterized by ignorance and lack of understanding. It is also criminally libellous. I think you should relax a bit.”

Thanks for being concerned Hallur. A nice change from the usual message from people who write in Icelandic in the comments that I am going to “get it”.
What is it exactly you find libellous in this text? Please explain.

Thanks for your original post Daði. I agree with every word.
Hallur’s vociferous reaction is interesting, in a morbid sort of way …
