Independence Party Tragedy

This week Arni Johnsen, MP for the Independence Party arose from his bought and paid for seat in Althingi and said that “The EU is a new Soviet”.

Almost noone paid much attention and those few who did said, “Arni is an old criminal”.

Bjarni Benediktsson was against EU membership, then for EU membership, then against EU membership talks, then for EU membership talks, then for a national vote on whether Iceland should talk to the EU. Tomorrow he is expected to struggle with the preferrable sequence for the left and the right foot in the difficult function of walking.

Another Independence Party MP, Petur Blondal scolded his colleguae Ragnheidur Rikhardsdottir for not towing the party line of double elections regarding the EU. He told her she should go and form another Independence Party. So much for the basic rule of “members of parliament shall only vote according to their own conviction”.

Ragnheidur on the other hand could form a new party. There could be room there for the disgraced former mayor of Kopavogur. It turns out that Ragnheidur herself  and parties connected to her made tens of millions on town-planning in Mosfellsbær, while she was the mayor there before coming to parliament.

Shakespeare couldn’t have done much better at creating a farce.
