“Would you like the EU to take the credit for our victories?”
Does this video imply that we can claim victory if Germany, France or Spain wins the World Cup in July? Or that we can claim victory no matter who wins Eurovision? And does this mean that people in Spain take great pride in Norway’s gold medals at the Winter Olympics?
Well…although I am dumbfounded that someone could be so incredibly stupid to think that EU membership would lead to this, I am sure that this is just the beginning of the most ridiculous national debate in history. And I would not bet against the standard being lowered even further.
Of course the people responsible for this wish to remain anonymous. Iceland’s worst enemies are truly not outside the borders, they are hiding within.
…oh, and the Independence Party has added ten MP’s in the latest polls.

The more I think about this video the stupider it gets.
Iceland’s “victory” was actually a silver medal, 2nd place is a great achievement but not victory by any means.
The real winners were France, who are already in the EU… why wouldn’t Barroso be rather congratulating them on CNN?
And how many Spaniards or Germans do you usually see cheering the French national team on?
Oh boy!

To me this is just too absurd to scare me away from the EU. While watching it, I thought this came from a pro-EU site and the final words would be “are you really dumb enough to think that this will happen?”.
And while we’re talking about the EU scare: Can anyone please tell me what natural resources from the current EU member countries have been stolen by the EU? A list would be fine.
The anti-EU people keep saying that we will lose control over our fishing and even our electricity, but is there any evidence that other countries have lost control over theirs?

Well, everyone has lost control over their fishing via the CFP.
AFAIK, that is the only one that there’s even the potential to lose control over.
I say “potential”, because presumably Iceland would not join without an opt-out (or similar) from the CFP.

I’ve just finished watching the Olympics, and every nation in the EU seemed to be cheering for their own nation, as usual. I somehow can’t see the Germans cheering the Austrian ski team to victory, for example.
National pride, or patriotism, or whatever you want to call it, has not gone away just because nations are in the EU. Old historical tensions are now manifest on the sports field not the battlefield ( watch an England-Germany football match!). This is a good thing.
The video is scaremongering. Entry into the EU needs careful thought and negotiation.

Germans cheering an Austrian team might be an exception for some reasons. But I remember cheering the Danish soccer team in the European Football Championship 1992 against the German – as a German. It’s one historic achievment of the EU that you can choose the team you are cheering on instead of being stuck in nationalistic trenches. And indeed, I have already cheered on the French team in certain situations as well, why not?

one should ask the question why some peeps here in iceland are so afraid of joining the eu?
i have only one answer, the eu skeptics here in iceland extrapolate their way of dealing with others resources in case they would be in power within the eu. thats just how the human being operates.
within all its limitations and bureaucracy, the eu is one of the biggest achievements which the old continent came up with. its in my opinion one of the noblest clubs you can be a member of. the motivation for its founders was to create peace. the leaders of france, belgium, germany, italy, luxemburg and the netherlands had learned from two world wars where wrong guided nationalism leads to and created the montan-union,a union which controlled coal and heavy industry to prevent unilateral arms production. thats how it all started….and its far from being over only because greece is stumbling
just an experiment for your thoughts. imagine a country with the mindest described in the video above in the middle of the continent. imho, these r the ideal ingredients for conflict. time warp to 1914.

I had no idea what “the CFP” is, but it lead me to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Fisheries_Policy, which is an interesting read…

nn: this is an interesting quote from the Wikipeda site.
2009
In 2009, the EU Commission launched a wide-ranging debate[10] on the way that EU fisheries are managed. It received very valuable contributions from EU citizens, organisations and EU-countries. The report on the consultation will be presented in March 2010.
Imagine if Iceland had been a participant in this debate instead of being sulky on the sidelines.

It also claims that each country has an allotted quota, subdivided into individual ships, so if other countries fish in our waters we are surely allowed to catch a similar value from their waters. If Iceland wouldn’t royally f**k up the membership negotiations the impact on the fishing industry could be minimal.
Of course the “control” (i.e. saying how much of each kind to fish each year) would be lost, but I really don’t see how joining the EU would bring every fishing vessel from Europe into our waters, vacuuming up all our fish in a matter of weeks – as some naysayers would have us believe.

LOL! If anything, the closer the relation, the more of a nemesis appear. For that reason, as a Scot, I can heartily cheer on Germany, France, Austria, or anyone else… as long as they are playing against England.

As an Englishman, I would always support Scotland, unless they were playing England or maybe Wales!.
But the point is, better to have intense national rivalries at sporting events, than on the battlefield.

Nn,
the CFP is one big reason why Iceland should negotiate very carefully if it wants to join the EU. It hasn’t done the British fishing industry any good at all. I am all in favour of more integration in Europe but the fisheries and agriculture polices are very poor. A lot of money goes to subsidising inefficient producers, it’s the biggest item on the EU budget.
