Iceland Are You OK?

Every New Years Eve in Iceland follows a pattern.

Family dinner, bonfire and an almighty firework show, the most anarchic on Earth, toasting and partying.

Between the bonfire and the explosions, everyone sits down to watch one hour of comedy satire of the year gone by.

It is an old tradition from the days when TV wasn’t available that much. Like some old traditions, the Aramotaskaup as it is called, has often been boring, limp and unfunny. But not this year, when they had so much material to work with, it was sharp, critical and funny.

The last scene will become classic. Musician Pall Oskar turning Michael Jackson’s Smooth Criminal into an Icelandic farce, asking “Iceland are you OK”?

The video’s end has been lauded as wonderfully satisfying with the smooth criminals being led out of the president’s residence into a prison van driven by Eva Joly.

Prescient?
