They say that the Icelandic government is having a crisis. It is true but it might not mean that its days are numbered.
The loud barks from the unruly wing of the Left Greens regarding Magma Energy are like just about anything which comes from that direction, completely void of anything in the way of alternatives and solutions.
Ogmundur Jonasson, Gudfridur Lilja Gretarsdottir, Atli Gislason and Lilja Mosesdottir have a peculiar vision for their nation.
They are against the IMF’s presence in Iceland. But they have never offered an alternative as far as a willing and able creditor goes.
They are against the EU membership application. But they have never offered a cohesive vision for Iceland’s place in the world, or Iceland’s international relations strategy, or a solution to the failed currency and the volatile situation facing Icelandic households.
They don’t need to offer alternatives because they are appeasing their supporters within the party. And they are playing the nationalistic card.
Imagine if their threats were followed with action and the government exploded. Most people agree that the current cushion warmers in Althingi are not about to let a joke party take their place so an election is out of the question. Should the two parties that still need to clean house the most be let back into the government? It is not a pleasant thought to imagine an Independence Party rotten to the core or a divided Centre Party getting back any control while they await the Armageddon within.
The crisis of 2008 is probably going to be remembered as at least a ten year crisis. There is still to much mess that needs to be cleaned up and there are still too many selfish politicians standing in the way of any reform.
Reminds one of the story an Icelandic professor told of his trip to Argentina last year. When he addressed the locals with the words, “when you had your crisis…” meaning when things were at their worst a decade ago his words were met with laughter. “What do you mean? We live in a constant crisis”.
